Busy week for UK high street
After the damp squib that was Easter weekend, the high street’s retailers have reasons to celebrate following last week’s heat wave. New figures show that trading was dramatically improved by the spell of sunshine, with shoppers hitting stores in their droves during the warmer weather.
Waitrose said it had recorded a 400% rise in sales of sun screen on Thursday, a 300% increase in ice cubes, sold 270% more BBQ food such as burgers and sausages, an 150% increase in sales and beer and 54% more rose wine.
Sainsbury’s also profited from the better temperatures, with a 365% increase in charcoal for BBQ while Tesco said it expected to sell 8 million sausages and 2 million strawberries.
Google confirms core algorithm update
Google has confirmed that it carried out a core algorithm update last week – explaining why some sites may have experienced an unexpected drop (or boost) in rankings. As usual, the search engine designed to provide specific details of the update but did confirm that the change is part of its regular development schedule which sees it roll out updates “several times a year”. It says that pages that experienced a drop aren’t necessarily being penalised as it could mean those pages that were under-rewarded previously are now being recognised.

Boohoo latest ecommerce retailer to report strong sales growth
Last week we reported that ASOS had made a bumper profit announcement – this week it’s the turn of fast fashion etailer, Boohoo. City analysts say that major investment should mean a 95% surge in sales this year, taking it to an expected £547.6 million, with a pre-tax profit of £47 million.
Boohoo also owns fashion site PrettyLittleThing.com and bought the US brand NastyGal after it imploded. Onlookers also expect that the site will announce even more investment, with a predicted £106 million of spending next year.
Much of Boohoo’s growth is being attributed to its majority stake in PrettyLittleThing.
