    What is a canonical category?

A canonical category is a standard product classification from Vendably's shared taxonomy that every merchant's products are classified into, independent of how your own store platform labels its categories. Rather than relying on the category names you use in your shop, Vendably assigns each product to a consistent, standardised category that works across all merchants and all destination channels.

    Why canonical categories matter

Destination channels like Google Shopping, Facebook Catalog, and other advertising and sales platforms operate their own product category systems. These systems are often incompatible with one another and with the category labels used in individual merchant stores.

Canonical categories solve this problem by providing Vendably with a consistent reference point. When you export products to a destination channel, Vendably translates from the canonical category to that channel's own taxonomy. This means your products are correctly categorised on each platform without you having to manually map categories for every channel you use.

Without canonical categories, you would need to maintain separate category mappings for each destination. Canonical categories centralise this work, making your product data more portable and reducing the risk of miscategorisation across channels.

    How it works in practice

Suppose your store labels a product "Footwear > Trainers". When you upload this product to Vendably, the system automatically classifies it against the canonical taxonomy. The product might be assigned the canonical category "Athletic Shoes". When you then export that product to Google Shopping, Vendably translates "Athletic Shoes" into Google's own category system, which might be "Apparel & Accessories > Shoes & Accessories > Athletic Shoes". The same product exported to Facebook would be mapped to Facebook's equivalent category.

This translation happens automatically without you needing to reconfigure anything for each channel. Your original store categories are preserved in your product data, but the canonical category becomes the bridge that enables consistent, accurate categorisation across all destinations.

    Automatic category classification

Vendably does not require you to manually assign canonical categories. Instead, the system includes an automatic category classification feature that suggests the appropriate canonical category for each product.

The classification process works in two stages. First, Vendably attempts to match your product's title, description, and existing category against known canonical categories using text matching. If an exact or high-confidence match is found, the system assigns that canonical category.

When text matching does not yield a confident result, Vendably applies a broader-term fallback. Rather than leaving a product uncategorised, the system assigns it to a more general canonical category that is likely to be correct based on available product data.

Uncertain matches are flagged for manual review. You can then verify the suggested category and adjust it if needed. This combination of automation and human oversight ensures that your products are consistently and accurately classified without requiring you to manually review every item.

    Related terms

Understanding canonical categories requires familiarity with a few related concepts:

product identifier: A unique code (such as a barcode, SKU, or GTIN) that identifies a specific product. Canonical categories are assigned to products identified by these unique codes, enabling consistent classification across all uses of that product.

quality score: A metric that reflects the completeness and accuracy of your product data. Canonical category assignment contributes to your overall quality score. Products with correctly assigned canonical categories are more likely to be approved for sale on destination channels and to perform better in search and recommendations.

    Summary

Canonical categories are the standard product classifications that Vendably uses to map your products consistently across all destination channels. By providing a shared reference taxonomy, canonical categories eliminate the need for manual category mapping for each channel and ensure that your products are categorised correctly wherever they are sold. Vendably's automatic classification feature assigns canonical categories with minimal manual effort, flagging uncertain cases for your review.
